Well, friends, I've gone and done it—I sacrificed a perfectly good Sunday morning coffee session to play mad scientist with AI video! After being thoroughly inspired (and, let's be honest, slightly intimidated) by the mind-blowing OpenAI Forum presentations from AI video artists Manuel Sainsily and William Selviz, I just had to see if my humble charcoal sketches could transform into something magical.
Spoiler alert: Sora took my scribbles and gave them LIFE!
What you're seeing here is one of my first attempts—a little digital offspring I've decided to share as a sneak peek into this fascinating world of AI animation. The process? Surprisingly quick! Upload, process, and voilà —my static drawings suddenly dance across the screen with personality I never explicitly gave them.
But let's not get carried away with the magic of it all. As someone who's dabbled in traditional filmmaking, I need to acknowledge the elephant in the room: producing even a short film the conventional way requires an orchestra of dedication, technical skill, artistic vision, and the patience of a meditation guru with nowhere else to be for several months. What Sora accomplishes in minutes typically demands weeks or months of human effort.
So where does this leave us creators? In the wild west of new possibilities, that's where!
I'm still processing what this means for my creative journey, but I'd love to hear your thoughts. Are you excited? Terrified? A healthy mixture of both (like me)? Drop your thoughts below and let me know!
P.S. My charcoal drawings are giving me judgmental looks from across the studio. I've assured them they're not being replaced... After a whole day of working out puzzles inside my skull, I need to get my hands moving and stain paper with lines and splatter.
